SUMMARY

The story dates back to 340 B.C. A harried, spooky Brahmin youth pledges revenge for the loathsome murder of his beloved father by the Emperor of Magadha, Dhana Nanda. Cold, cunning, brutal and provided with absolute lack of accepted ethics and values, he becomes the mightiest political deviser in Bharat (present India) and succeeds in unifying a ripped and smashed country against the invasion of the vicious army of the Greek deity, Alexander the Great.

Pitting the weak edges of both the forces versus each other, he accomplished an evil and staggering conquest and triumph in placing his follower Chandragupta Maurya on the throne of the ferocious Mauryan empire. The past knows him as an outstanding manoeuvrer, Chanakya.

Contented and a little bored by his success as a reis through the simple muster of his talented mind, he retreats into the shadows to write Arthashastra, the science of riches and schemes. But history, which jubilates in repeating itself, resuscitates Chanakya two and a half millennia later, because of a curse put on him by his childhood buddy and crush Suvasini, who was a part of his major schemes.
Chanakya takes rebirth in the form of Pandit Gangasagar Mishra, a poor Brahmin teacher in a small town of India who becomes a marionettist to a host of aspiring yet silly beings, including a certain slum child, Chandini Gupta, who evolves to be an attractive, intelligent and a strong woman.

Modern India ensues just as severed and divided as former Bharat by casteist and communal resentment, corruption and isolating politics and this happens to be Gangasagars feasting ground.
Can this sharp-witted pandit, who hunts on greed, crime, and sexual deviance, bring about another wonder of a united India? Will the Chanakya's Chant work once again?

CRITICISM

The book has been well approved by critics. The novel was released in Mumbai by Shashi Tharoor who called it a delightfully interesting and gripping read. Even though the novel is a historical narrative, it has been called a present-day novel that uses non-literary terms.

The author (Ashwin Sanghi), in his interview with Flipkart, elucidated that his aim was to write a quick thriller that would please more than the guide. Some literary spectators outlook the author’s work as a segment of rejuvenating in India’s folklore.

A review in the book blog INDIA reads described Chanakya's Chant as a very spellbinding read with very genuine characters, situations, and tactics. It is much similar to reading a blow by blow description of Indian politics today. Of course as Chanakya’s story so pertinently manifests, it is not very different from Indian politics 2500 years ago either.

So really the frauds, scandals, corruption, collateral harm, war dealing, innocent deaths, communal furor - all the ills that we inculpate the modern-day politicians of are nothing new. Nor is their use for attaining power a distinct characteristic of our scandalous leaders. “Power has always come at a cost and the cost as Chanakya points out is not just one’s sentiments but one’s moral sense as well.” This depicts the whole message of Chanakya’s Chant.

The novel also won the popular award like - “2010 Vodafone Crossword Book Award.”
